S/PDIF - What is? 
Digital outputs (also known as S/PDIF) preserves the digital music format 
for superior audio quality. Normal stereo receivers and speakers are "analog",
meaning sound is converted from digital to analog. 

If you have a digital input on your receiver, the music is transmitted from 
the PC to AudioTron to the receiver in digital format for the highest possible
quality of transfer.

The Atron uses standard Optical S/PDIF to output a PCM digital signal.
