Q: What do I need to connect my PC to the AT and what it costs/where to buy
in Europe/Austria? I have no network, simply a PC upstairs with internet
access via dial-up ISDN connection, and AT downstairs. I can't lay cable.
A: The upstairs/downstairs makes this a little more complicated. There are
several solutions that each get more expensive.
1. Run a long crossover cable between the two. In the US, you can
get cat 5 cables fairly cheap, or make your own. By looking around
online, a 100' foot cable usually will cost less than $100. Or you
can buy a box of 1000' for around $50 and make your own cables.
The main problem is getting the cable between the two. Most wives
seem to get testy with cat 5 cables running across the floor and up
the stairs.
2. In the US you could run HPNA.
3. In the US, some people are very happy with power line networking.
Not sure if you can use it in Austria. This would require buying
"two power line to ethernet" adapters.
4. Probably the most viable (and most expensive) would be to buy a
wireless network card for your PC and a Linksys WET11 for your
AudioTron. In the US, this would be $100 for the PCMCIA card
(and the PC adapter), plus $120 for the WET11.
NOTE: A regular cat5 patch cable is NOT a Crossover cable. In a Crossover
cable, one wire is crossed so a DIRECT connection can be made between
two PCs without a Router or Hub.
