Cat5e 'Crossover' cable length
Q: I have a 100' cat5e crossover (no hubs or switches) cable running through
the attic from my PC directly to the AT. When I power-on the AT I get the
    following message:
"Ethernet configured but no link, is ethernet cable connected?"
When I try just a 6' cat5e crossover cable it works like a charm. This is
a problem since my stereo is about 75' from my PC. I've heard (and read)
that cat5e cables should work up to around 350 feet.

A: This sounds like a cabling problem. Avoid making custom cables but if you
have to, make sure that they comply with the standards. The TIA-568B is
the normal standard that almost all commercial Ethernet TP cables follow.
It should be pointed out that if you need to make a cross-over cable, you
want to wire one end as A and the other as B. (Reversed)

NOTE: A regular cat5 patch cable is NOT a Crossover cable. In a Crossover
cable, one wire is crossed so a DIRECT connection can be made between
two PCs without a Router or Hub.
