When listening to real world musicians one of the things that adds
expressiveness and life to a piece of music is the way that the musician adds
a Glissando, or slide, between the notes of a phrase.
Your sound card or external device needs to support these Controller messages
in order to use them. Once you have created and saved your piece, here's one
way that you can add these nuances to your MIDI tracks.
1. Click on Window->Controller Editor (or press the ALT+W keys and then
press the number 2)
2. In the first dialog box at the top left hand side of the screen,
change the Controller to 65 Portamento.
3. Choose the pencil tool and draw a line at the beginning of your piece
from 0-128.
4. Change the Controller to 5 Portamento Time.
5. Choose the pencil tool and draw a line before the note(s) where you want
to add your Glissando. You would normally want this number to be between
58 and 78 depending on the amount of time you want before your slide
takes place. Higher number values result in longer times before the slide
occurs.
6. After you have your Glissando, you need to end with a Controller 5 with a
value of zero or you will continue getting glissandos between the rest of
the notes in your piece.
7. Once you have entered your Controller numbers and values, you can then edit
them in the Event List window. You can get to this window by clicking on
Window->Event List (or by pressing ALT+W followed by the number 6.
Once in the Event List you can edit the Start Times for the Controller
messages as well as the actual Controller values to hear the exact slide
that you envision.
