Inserting Notes (Standard / Songwriter / StarterKit) 
When inserting notes, it's helpful to have the Maximum Step Value parameter
set to quarter notes.  This parameter sets the insert note boundaries when
entering notes with the mouse or in Step Entry mode.  
To set this up, follow these two steps: 

In the program's menu bar - 

1) Click on Options, then Note Entry Options. 
2) In the Note Entry Options dialog, set Maximum Step Value to Quarter notes.
