56K - FAQs

All files and documentation are offered on an *AS IS* basis and you assume full responsibility for using them.
Windows 95 Installation
The 56K Windows 95 driver allows the 56K to be used as a digital input and
output in the Windows 95 environment. The 56K can then be used with any
Windows digital editing software (ie. Wave for Windows).

Setting The Volume
------------------
You will not be able to use the Windows 95 mixer to control the volume of
the 56K. The volume should be controlled by your A/D, D/A converter
(ie. a DAT machine).

File Formats
------------
The 56K will only accurately play and record 32, 44.1, and 48 KHz files.
Files of lower resolutions will be interpolated and may not play correctly.
Additionally, you may experience some problems with recording/playing mono
files.

SoundStage
----------
The original SoundStage software should be run in real DOS mode, rather
than in a Windows DOS box. Select Start -> Shut Down -> Restart the
Computer in MS-DOS Mode. It may be necessary to create a custom
"config.sys" file which has the appropriate memory exclude for the 56K:

  DEVICE=C:\DOS\EMM386.EXE X=D000-D7FF

Consult your Windows 95 manual for more information on DOS Real Mode.

Installation Of The 56K In Windows 95
-------------------------------------
1) The installation of the 56K in Windows 95 is accomplished through the
"Add New Hardware" option in the Windows 95 Control Panel.
2) Do not allow Windows 95 to search for the new hardware
   (it will not find it).
3) On the screen labeled "Hardware Types" select "Sound, Video, and Game
Controllers" from the bottom of the list.
4) Where appropriate, click on the "Have Disk" icon to install the file.
5) Insert the disk which includes the "56k.inf" file and "56k.drv" file into
the floppy drive. These files are contained in the "56k95.zip" file,
available on the Turtle Beach FTP site.
6) Select "Turtle Beach 56K" from the list and click [Next] or [OK].
7) Click [Finish] and the files will be copied.
8) Restart Windows 95 and watch for any error messages. If you do not get
any, test the 56K by trying to play a .WAV and .MID file through the
Win 95 Media Player (try to use a 16-bit, 44.1k, stereo file). If the
card does not work, consult step 9, otherwise proceed step 10.
9) If you receive any error messages, reconfigure the card's settings using
   the following procedure:

   A) Open My Computer -> Control Panel (or by clicking Start -> Settings ->
      Control Panel).
   B) Select "Multimedia."
   C) Click on the "Advanced" tab.
   D) Double-click on "Audio Devices" under Multimedia Drivers.
   E) Double-click on "Audio for Turtle Beach 56K..." This will bring up a
      menu for the 56K.
   F) Click on "Settings."
   G) Make changes to the setting that is causing the error. (See the manual
      for error explanations.)
   H) Repeat this procedure until you have settings that work.
Note: when changing the Port Address settings you must also change the
dip switches on the card. See the 56K Manual for details or the
            "Board Configuration" article).
   I) Once you have found acceptable settings (IRQ/INTERRUPT, PORT ADDRESS,
and RAM ADDRESS), write them down.

Note: the .INF install will setup the 56K at these default settings:
            IRQ/INTERRUPT = 10
            PORT ADDRESS = 290
            RAM ADDRESS = D000-D7FF.

10) Registering The 56K With The Windows 95 Registry
For this next step, you will need to know the current settings of the
56K card. If you don't have the settings written down, steps A-H below
explain how to find that information

    A) Click Start -> Settings -> Control Panel.
    B) Double-click the "Multimedia" icon.
    C) Select the "Advanced" tab.
    D) Double-click "Audio Devices".
    E) Select "Audio for Turtle Beach 56K".
    F) Click on "Properties".
    G) Click on "Settings".
    H) Note the I/O, DMA, and IRQ settings.
    I) Return to the Control Panel window.
    J) Double-click the "System" icon.
    K) Select the "Device Manager" tab.
    L) Double-click "Computer".
    M) For each of the radio buttons (IRQ, DMA, and I/O), the 56K settings
should say "In use by an unknown device." If this is not the case,
you will need to reserve the settings that the 56K is on by using the
"Reserve Resources" tab dialog. The only setting you should have to
reserve for the 56K is the IRQ. If you are using the default
settings, add "10" to the list of reserved IRQs.
    N) Click [OK] and a dialog box will appear asking if you wish to restart
       your computer. Check [Yes].
    O) Return to the Device Manager, and verify that the settings have been
       excluded.
