The following applies ONLY to the VaUSD. Not the PCI or ADX. Both PCI & ADX
will function by default. The following is offered on an *AS IS* basis,
without Support and no warranties implied or expressed about the results.
The VA USB product was designed and developed exclusively for Windows XP
and other Windows systems (including the most recent one Vista) are not
supported.
If built-in audio capture is not functional in the USB model, here is a
workaround using the Line Input on a PCI Sound Card:
ISSUE:
VideoAdvantage USB (herein referred to as "VA USB") was not designed for
Windows Vista and unfortunately cannot be guaranteed to work in this
operating system. VA USB contains both a video and audio capture device,
and the audio capture device may not work on all computers running Vista.
When VA USB is installed in Windows Vista, depending on the system, the
built-in audio capture usually works (using AdFullCap). However, when
VA USB is unplugged and reconnected, or if the system is rebooted, the USB
audio portion of the device may no longer work (as shown in the screen
capture below).
In testing we have performed, we have found that when this occurs, the
video capture portion of VA USB continues to work and can be used in
conjunction with another audio capture device to successfully capture video
and audio in Vista.
WORKAROUND:
Before proceeding, we would recommend that you download latest version of
AdFullCap from www.TurtleBeach.com. This version has been updated to set
the default capture directory to directory that the system's current user
can access and write to without issue. NOTE: The version of AdFullCap
included on CD will work, but the capture path must be changed when using
in Vista due to more restrictions on file access and creation.
The default path is "C:\", and in order to capture successfully, this must
be changed to a directory the current user has "full control" over (for
example, "Documents" or "Videos" in the user folder).
As stated earlier, if the audio portion of VA USB is not working in Vista,
another audio capture device can be used to successfully capture audio in
Vista while using VA USB to capture video. We recommend using the LINE
INPUT of a PCI sound card (such as the Turtle Beach Montego DDL) to perform
this function.
This can be done as follows:
1) Connect your video sources to the VA USB (either Composite or S-Video);
leave the audio unconnected.
2) Connect your stereo audio source to your sound card's Line Input. Most
likely, your audio source will terminate in Male RCA connections (red &
white), and your sound card's Line Input will have an 1/8" mini-jack input.
To connect your source cables to your sound card, you will need an adapter
cable (most likely a "Y-Cable" - 1/8" plug to Dual Female RCA jacks - which
are available at any electronics supply store, or on our website at:
http://www.turtlebeach.com/products/cables.aspx pictured below).
3) Launch AdFullCap and click on the 'Audio' tab to access the program's
audio options. In the "Audio Capture Device" drop-down menu, select your
sound card's Line Input as the capture device - as circled in red in the
example below, the Turtle Beach Montego DDL's 'Line Input' has been
selected.
4) After selecting the appropriate input on the 'Audio' tab, you can begin
recording - press AdFullCap's 'Rec' button to begin the recording, and
then start playback on your source.
REMINDER:
Please be aware that since third party sound card drivers are relied upon
to capture the LINE INPUT audio, we cannot guarantee the performance and/or
compatibility with all devices. Simply put, this may not work with the
hardware that is installed on your system.
NOTES:
-- When beginning capture, it may take 5 - 10 seconds for the activity meter
to show that it is capturing frames. Be patient and do not interrupt, and
within a few more seconds, activity will be displayed and the CPU meter
should reflect the application's current state accurately. Do not worry!
It will record and will not drop frames. You just don't see it, so be
patient.
-- If there are any audio/video sync issues, try disabling all preview
options. Depending on the power of the system being used, "Preview" may
have to be disabled completely (Option tab / uncheck "Turn Off Preview
While Recording" and "Enable Preview on Start"). If you experience any
audio/video sync issues when capturing, please try again with all preview
options disabled.
-- If changing video capture sources within AdFullCap (i.e., from COMPOSITE
to S-VIDEO or vice-versa), you may need to restart the program in order
to be able to capture to the source selected. On some systems, beginning
the capture will show CPU activity, but not actually capture any frames,
but after restarting the application, this no longer occurs.
-- Depending on the sound card being used, during capture, audio may have some
anomalies (e.g., crackly, distorted, feedback/duplicate streams, etc), even
if 'Preview' has been disabled. In the testing we have been able to
perform, this only occurs during the capture and does not affect the result
file - the audio is captured and plays back as expected. As there is no
way to affect operation of third party sound card drivers, if you find that
something similar is occurring, the best workaround is to mute the output
of your sound card during capture. The easiest way to do this is to click
(left-click) on the speaker icon in the Vista Taskbar System Tray and press
the 'Mute' button. After capture is complete, un-mute the output.
-- Please keep in mind that this workaround assumes that you are using the
AdFullCap software. While the VA USB hardware may work with other capture
software, it was designed to work primarily using AdFullCap, so its
performance and/or compatibility with other capture software cannot be
guaranteed.
