Audio Issues - Distortion or stuttering in AMD K6 based systems (Win 9x)
We have found that in some system configurations built on the "Super Seven" 
platform (AMD K6-2, K6-3) the Montego series cards may not work optimally. 
 
The most important issue is that the Windows 95/98 operating system must be
updated with the most recent drivers for the motherboard chipset (usually VIA
MVP3 or MVP4). 

Even with the latest drivers installed, some K6 based systems have problems
playing back MIDI and/or audio optimally.  Good audio and MIDI performance 
can be restored by changing certain settings in the Montego or Montego II 
Control Panel. 

HOW TO CHANGE THE SETTINGS:
The following instructions were written using a Montego II with the Digital
I/O option as an example.  The process is exactly the same for any of the
Montego series cards.  Any differences are noted below. 

1) Open the Montego II (or Montego) Control Panel – 
   Go to Start | Settings | Control Panel and double click on the Montego II
   Control Panel: 

  


 For Montego II:
    In the MIDI tab, uncheck the Effects On box and set the Wavetable Mode to 
    64 Voices (the default is 320 Voices). 

    This setting will reduce the number of notes the Montego II's internal
    synthesizer can *simultaneously* play to 64.  All 128 General MIDI 
    instruments will still be available for playback, which is the same as 
    in 320 Voice mode. 


 For Montego A3DXstream:
    In the MIDI tab, uncheck the Effects On box and set the Wavetable Mode to 
    32 Voices (the default is 64 Voices). 

    This setting will reduce the number of notes the Montego's internal
    synthesizer can *simultaneously* play to 32.  All 128 General MIDI 
    instruments will still be available for playback, which is the same as 
    in 64 Voice mode. 

  


2) In the A3D Settings, put a check mark in the box labeled 
   Disable DirectSound Hardware Acceleration.  

  


These changes reduce the processing overhead on the central processing unit
(CPU) while playing back MIDI or audio, allowing for better system
performance.
