This is either caused by a conflict that Windows could not resolve, or older
sound card drivers which are still present in the system.
Edit the "system.ini" file:
1) From Win 95, click Start -> Run -> "sysedit" and select "system.ini".
2) Look in the [386Enh] section for lines that read
device=vsbpd.386
device=vsbd.386
device=vadlibd.386
and remove them. (These are generic Sound Blaster(TM) and Adlib(TM)
drivers and will conflict with the sound card.)
3) If you had previously installed another sound card, contact the hardware
manufacturer for the names of the driver files. Remove all references to
them from the "system.ini" file.
If there is still a problem:
1) Edit the "system.ini" file again
(Start -> Run -> "sysedit" and select "system.ini".)
2) Disable the following lines in the [386Enh] section by inserting a
semi-colon ";" in front of them:
device=vsndsys.386
device=vsnd16d.386
device=v930d.386
One of those lines will be present - disabled, it will look like:
;device=vsndsys.386
When Windows loads, that line will be ignored.
3) Restart Windows.
a) If error messages are displayed, but Windows does not lock up, this
means that there is a conflict with the digital audio settings
(see below).
b) If Windows locks up, the problem may be with MIDI (see below).
To change digital audio settings:
1) Edit the "system.ini" file.
2) Locate the digital audio sections. The names will match the lines you
disabled in the [386Enh] section, for example:
[vsndsys.drv]
[vsnd16.drv]
[v930.drv]
3) These sections contain digital audio settings which may need to be changed:
Setting Description
------- -----------
Interrupt IRQ used by digital audio.
DMADAC DMA channel used by card for playback.
DMAADC DMA channel used by card for recording
(if full-duplex is enabled).
If Windows locks up:
1) Edit the "system.ini" file.
2) Disable all lines in the [drivers] section that pertain to the Turtle
Beach sound card. These would be the lines that start off with:
midi=
wave=
mixer=
aux=
Do not disable the lines that read:
midimapper=
wavemapper=
3) Reboot Windows.
a) If Windows still locks up, the problem is not with the sound card
because none of the drivers are loading.
b) If the system no longer locks up, then the problem was with the MIDI
settings.
To change the MIDI settings:
1) Edit the "system.ini" file.
2) Look for the section that reads
[mpu401.drv]
[mpu401p.drv]
3) Change the Interrupt (IRQ) for the MPU-401 port.
Remove the semi-colons from the start of the lines to test the changes.
(It may be necessary to experiment with different settings. Unfortunately,
we cannot tell you which settings will work, but it is easy to change them,
and a simple reboot will tell you if it worked.)
