MIDI - Do I need a Keyboard & Driver to record MIDI? 
'Record Producer' is designed to record MIDI from a MIDI keyboard. Typical
Soundcards/soundchips receive MIDI data from a MIDI keyboard through a
joystick port. Laptops usually don't have joystick ports.  

So you need to ask yourself, are you planning on recording from a MIDI
keyboard or not? If you're not planning on recording from a MIDI keyboard 
you do not need one. But if you are planning on recording from a MIDI
keyboard, you need a MIDI interface cable that will connect to your laptop. 
Laptops typically have USB ports.
