Catalina - FAQs

All files and documentation are offered on an *AS IS* basis and you assume full responsibility for using them.
General 1
IMPORTANT!
The S/PDIF out only sends PCM data not audio. It is up to your Receiver
to decode the data and send it to the correct speaker not the Sound Card.
There are no Dolby Digital / DTS Decoders on the card, so it cannot decode
an incoming signal. If you have Decoding Software from your DVD etc.
installed, then the signal will go out *decoded*. Otherwise, it will be
    PCM DATA.

Sample Rates:
Q: The documentation says S/PDIF works with many different frequencies.
How can I change the input frequency setting?

A: This cannot be changed. Please set the CD Player to the standard 44.1 kHz
    sample rate.

                       *****************************

Q: If everything were working, should I hear music from my speakers when I
play a CD in my CD Player? Do I have to use some kind of recording
software to hear the sound from the front speakers?

A: If it is configured correctly you should hear the CD Player out the front
    speakers.

                       *****************************

Q: If everything were working, should I be able to record using Windows XP
Sound Recorder App? If yes then Under File - Properties, is there a
    particular setting?

A: Yes, you would need to set this to 44.1 kHz 16 bit stereo.

                       *****************************

S/PDIF Selector:
Q: If I use AudioSurgeon, what source do I select.. I don't see S/PDIF
    digital-in as a choice?

A: When S/PDIF In is selected in the Catalina Control Panel then that will
    automatically be the recording source.

                       *****************************

MIDI Wavetable Synth?
Q: Is there a Wavetable Synthesizer on this Card?

A: The Catalina is an Audio Card and it does not have any MIDI features:
(Wavetable Synth, MIDI Joystick Port, Wavetable Header, etc.).

Multiple Output Channels:
Q: I'm assembling a multimedia program to display multiple videos onto 7
different monitors. Each of those monitors will have a speaker mounted
above it for audio. All the video and audio will be coming out of one CPU.
I'm looking for the best audio control option available. I looked at your
Catalina card for example. It has seven channels; can those channels be
turned on and off, or controlled to play in one speaker at a time?

A: The Catalina does have volume control for each speaker but you cannot
assign a different sound file to each output.

Virtual Surround Sound:
Q: I have a 5.1 speaker setup and I would like to enable this feature:
Virtual surround sound technology converts stereo sources
to multi channel format for listening to MP3 digital music
or movies with enhanced surround sound on 4 or 6 speakers.
If I click on each of the speakers in your diagnostics, all six of them
are working, but when I run the Sound test, or play an MP3, I only get
sound out of the front, left and subwoofer. Also, do I need to connect
the DVD player internally to the sound card to get Dolby Surround Sound?

A: The Catalina mirrors the stereo signal to all speakers. Virtual 5.1
(Stereo Expander) needs to be enabled in the Advanced Control tab in the
Catalina control panel. This should be turned off when watching DVDs.
You do not need to connect the DVD player internally to the sound card
    to get Dolby Surround Sound.

Manually switching On & Off Stereo EXpander:
Q: I have checked the Stereo EXpander box under the Advanced Tab so that I
can listen to music and TV through all channels but when I go to play a
DVD with Dolby Digital I have found that I need to manually uncheck the
Stereo Expander box in order to get Dolby output. I am trying to setup
an HTPC and it is proving to be quite a hassle to manually switch Stereo
EXpander on and off whenever we want to watch a DVD (or vice versa,
whenever I want to listen to music). Is there a checkbox that I am
missing? Is it possible to switch back and forth automatically depending
on whether the sound is Dolby Digital EX encoded or just music?

A: To get proper Dolby Digital output, you must turn off Stereo Expander.
Sorry, there is no auto-switch feature. This feature might be available
in more pricey Semi-Pro level Soundboards with auto sensing capabilities.

"5.1 Magic Sound"?
Q: On the sound check mixer, all channels output control tab, subwoofer
advanced settings, there is a check box for "5.1 Magic Sound". What is
this and what does it do?

A: That is the same feature as the Stereo EXpander feature in the Catalina
Control Panel. Takes stereo audio and sends it to all speakers.
