Q: There's a slight hiss coming from the headset. Is there a way to remove it?
A: There are three potential sources of hiss and noise in the X3 headphones:
1. The IR audio receiver in the headphones: As in any amplified audio
signal, there is inherent background noise in the audio IR signal
received from the transmitter. To minimize this source of hiss, set the
input sensitivity on the transmitter so the signal does not distort yet
is as loud as possible, then turn down the headphone volume to a
comfortable level. You can check if this is the source of hiss by
turning down the headphone volume to zero.
2. The XBOX controller talkback signal: The XBOX controller can also add
hiss and background noise to the headphone signal when the talkback
cable is connected to the headphones. The amount of noise is
proportional to the volume control setting on the talkback puck
inserted into the XBOX controller. Turning down this volume will reduce
the hiss and noise from the controller. You can check if this is the
source of hiss by removing the cable from the headphones.
3. The microphone monitor: The X3 microphone signal is routed to the
headphones so you can hear yourself speak. A byproduct of this is that
you will also hear ambient noise around you. If you've turned down the
headphone volume and unplugged the talkback cable, and you still hear
some background hiss, then it's probably coming from the mic picking up
the sound of your room. This monitor level is preset internally and
cannot be modified.
One last tip is to make sure you're using fresh batteries. As the
battery voltage runs down, the circuits inside the headphones can't
work at their optimum level, which increases the background noise.
