Cubase VST 3.71 and Pinnacle in Windows 98
Though many people have reported problems running Cubase with the Pinnacle
(or Fiji), we were able to get Cubase VST 3.71 to run well in our test system,
a Pentium III 450 on a motherboard with Intel i440BX chipset and 128MB SDRAM.
Peripherals included an Ultra33 hard drive, Matrox G400 DualHead AGP card
(32MB), a 3COM PCI network card and a Pinnacle REV F. Ultra66 was not used.

First off, make sure you have all updates installed for the version of Cubase
you are using.

SETTING UP CUBASE VST WITH THE PINNACLE:
It is vital to use conservative settings in the Cubase ASIO/MME setup utility
(Audio > System > ASIO Control Panel > Advanced).

ASIO-MME SETUP:
This basically comes down to a choice between DirectX or Multimedia drivers.
In Audio I/O, choose ASIO Multimedia from the ASIO Device list box. We were
unable to get good results using ASIO DirectX.

There are no ASIO 1.0 or 2.0 drivers available for the Pinnacle or Fiji.

BUFFERS:
We found that setting the buffers to an odd number (we used 3) seems to work
a lot better than the default setting of 4 buffers. It is possible that 5
buffers will work better for you. Some experimentation may be required here.

BUFFER SIZE:
When set to a buffer size smaller than 2048, audio tracks in Cubase started
to stutter and pop. A buffer size of 2048 seemed to work well. If audio
playback in Cubase still stutters, try a larger buffer size of 3072 or even
4096.

BIT DEPTH:
In the Card Options list in ASIO Multimedia Setup – Advanced Options, you can
check 16-bit Only to limit the Pinnacle to 16 bit resolution, which is the
default setting in Cubase. We unchecked this and were able to record and play
back 24-bit audio tracks with no apparent problems. It should be noted that
doing this might increase latency. You also may not be able to play back as
many tracks or insert as many VST plug-ins in 24-bit resolution as you would
in 16 bits.

LATENCY:
The Pinnacle and Fiji are older design ISA cards (designed ca. 1995-6) that
route all data through their internal Motorola 56301 DSPs. There is some
unavoidable latency that cannot be compensated for by speeding up the settings
in Cubase.

Using the Pinnacle, we were able to get the latency down to 200mS using 3
buffers, but latency went up to 300mS with 5 buffers. If you absolutely
*require* lower latency times, we recommend that you contact Steinberg
and ask what they recommend for use with their software.
