On all recent motherboards (Pentium and later), there are two built in IDE
controllers ready for you to use. You should NEVER use an old ISA soundcard's
IDE controller on a recent-design motherboard with two built in IDE
controllers! This may cause severe resource conflicts and your PC may not work
properly.
Do not install the CD-ROM drive as a slave to an UltraDMA hard drive on the
Primary IDE Controller. This will slow down the UltraDMA drive considerably.
INSTALLING A CD-ROM DRIVE IN WIN95:
-----------------------------------
1) Configure the jumpers on the back panel of the CD-ROM drive so that the
drive is the "MASTER".
2) Determine where the secondary EIDE controller is located on the
motherboard:
a) Follow the 40-pin ribbon cable from the hard drive back to the
motherboard. This will likely be where the Primary IDE Controller
connector is located.
b) There should be another 40-pin connector next to the ribbon cable
connects to the Primary IDE Controller on the motherboard. This will be
the secondary IDE controller.
3) Connect the 40-pin IDE ribbon cable from the CD-ROM to the secondary EIDE
controller header on the motherboard.
4) If you must use your old ISA soundcard, be sure to disable the secondary
IDE controller on the sound card. You will need to disable the controller
both on the sound card itself (usually by moving a jumper) and from the
Device Manager in Windows 95.
5) With the CD-ROM drive connected to the Secondary IDE Controller (and the
IDE controller disabled on your old ISA soundcard), start up your computer.
6) Windows Plug 'n Play may "find" the Secondary IDE Controller. Follow the
prompts to install it. The exact name of your Secondary IDE Controller
will vary depending on the type of motherboard you have. Motherboards with
Intel chipsets for Pentium MMX, Celeron, Pentium II and Pentium III
processors will be named something like "Intel 82371xx PCI Bus Master IDE
Controller" or "Secondary IDE Controller (dual fifo)". PCs with AMD K6-2
or K6-III processors on a VIA chipset will have something like a "VIA Bus
Mastering IDE Interface".
7) Click [Next] until a [Finish] button is displayed. Click [Finish].
8) Check in the Windows Device Manager under CD-ROM that your CD-ROM drive is
listed. If so, the drive is now installed.
