Installing old TBS CD-ROM kits in a new PC
__________________________________________
A few very old CD-ROM kits were made with a proprietary interface for the
CD-ROM drive. These should not be used anymore, now that IDE/ATAPI CD-ROM
drives are so common and inexpensive (as of this writing, 32X speed
IDE/ATAPI CD-ROM drives are widely available for less than $50).
The Turtle Beach CD-ROM kits consisted of an IDE/ATAPI CD-ROM drive and
a Monte Carlo or Tropez 32 sound card, with an IDE interface built in.
Since all new PC motherboards come with both the primary and secondary
IDE ports built in, trying to add the third (tertiary) IDE port on the
soundcard will almost always cause hardware conflicts.
If you wish to install your old CD-ROM drive in a Pentium or later PC,
it is strongly recommended that a newer PCI sound card be used instead of the
now obsolete Monte Carlo or Tropez 32 (the Turtle Beach Montego II is highly
recommended).
The CD-ROM drive's ribbon cable should be attached to the secondary IDE
interface built in to the computer's motherboard.
The CD-ROM will need to be configured as MASTER if it is the only device
installed on the secondary IDE port.
Instructions for how to do this are included in your CD-ROM Kit documentation.
