Q: What type of CD-ROM can I hook up to the Tropez?
A: The IDE interface on Tropez will only accept an Enhanced IDE/ATAPI
CD-ROM. Check with the CD-ROM manufacturer to verify that your model
is an Enhanced IDE/ATAPI drive.

Q: I already have an Enhanced IDE (EIDE) controller for the hard drives in
my computer. Do I hook up my Enhanced IDE CD-ROM drive to the Tropez
card or to the controller card?
A: There can only be one EIDE controller in a system at one time. If you
already have an EIDE controller, you must hook the EIDE CD-ROM to that
controller and not to the Tropez. When you install the Tropez, choose
"NO CD-ROM" to avoid any conflicts with the existing controller. If you
are not sure how to connect the controller card, or you are not sure if
you have an EIDE controller, consult your computer's manual.
During the Windows portion of the installation, you will be asked if you
want to change any of the default settings. Since the EIDE standard
defaults to IRQ 15, choose [Yes] for changing the defaults and select an
IRQ besides 15 for the WaveFront Synthesizer settings. (The other
choices are 5,9, or 12.)

Q: I'm running a CD-ROM with Tropez, but my computer will not recognize the
drive.
A: First check:
1. Is power going to the CD-ROM? (Try opening and closing the CD-ROM
tray.)
2. Is the 40-pin ribbon cable connected properly? (The red strip on
the cable should be connected to pin 1.)
3. Have you already selected "ATAPI CD-ROM" during installation as
well as installing the separate CD-ROM drivers disk?
4. Be sure you do not already have an EIDE controller in the system.
Since Tropez is acting as the CD-ROM's controller card, it must be
initialized before the CD-ROM drivers are executed. This means that the
line:
"device=c:\tropez\dosapps\tzmode.exe"
in the "config.sys" file must appear before any line mentioning the CD-ROM.
If this is not the case, either re-type the line above the CD-ROM line and
delete the other references, or "cut and paste" the line to the top of the
file.

Q: The CD section of Sierra will not work and when I try TBCD (I get a
"Return Code 266" error). What does this mean?
A: This is an easily-solved error. Follow these steps:
1. Make sure you have an audio CD in the CD-ROM drive, not a data
CD-ROM.
2. Select Control Panel from the Main program group.
3. Select "Drivers" and click [Add].
4. Choose "[MCI] CD Audio" and click [OK].
5. Insert the appropriate Windows installation diskette and click [OK].
6. When the driver is installed, a "One CD-ROM detected" message will
appear.
7. Close the Control Panel and try Sierra or TBCD again.

Q: Why can't I hear anything when I play an audio CD in my CD-ROM drive?
A: In order to hear output from the CD-ROM drive, you must make one of two
connections. Either run an external cable from the headphone output of
the CD-ROM drive to the AUX input of the Tropez, or run an internal cable
from the back of the CD-ROM drive to the 4 pin connector ("J1") on the
Tropez card. This is a stereo input on the Tropez card, so it will
consist of a Left Pin, a Right Pin, and two Ground Pins. Shown below
are the proper pin-outs for the "J1" connector:
Top of Tropez Card
--------------------------------------------|
M M M IDE CD-ROM Connector J1 |
E E E oooo |
M M M ^^^^ |
O O O |||| |
R R R |||+--------> Left Signal
Y Y Y ||+---------> Ground
|+----------> Right Signal
1 2 3 +-----------> Ground

(If this diagram does not look right, highlight the diagram and change the
font to the "Courier New" True Type font at 10 pt size.)
It is only necessary for one of the two grounds to be connected to the
CD-ROM drive. If you have a cable connected to the Tropez already and you
want to verify that the correct signal is going to the correct pin use the
following colors as a guide:
Red = Right Signal
White, Green = Left Signal
Black, Silver = Ground
(You can also order a custom cable, available from Pacific Interconnections
at (800)706-0510.)
