Connecting Rio to a card that doesn't transmit MIDI IN through the Header
The Rio wavetable synthesizer is designed to work with all sound cards that
have a MIDI header. Certain cards with a MIDI header (such as the Sound
Blaster Pro 16 Advanced Signal Processor and Sound Blaster 16) do not have
MIDI IN through the header. If you own a sound card that does not transmit
MIDI IN data, follow these directions for proper installation of your Rio
synthesizer:

Hardware:

Connect Rio to the sound card following the directions in the Hardware
Installation section of the Rio User's Guide. Remember to add SampleStore
RAM to enable the SampleStore technology on your Rio Synthesizer.

Software:

Install the Rio software following the directions in the Software
Installation section of the Rio User's Guide.

During software setup, a dialog box titled "Rio Attached to Sound Blaster 16
ASP?" will appear. Click [Yes] to start the Rio Configuration Utility. In
this utility:

  1. Uncheck the "Daughter Board MIDI OUT Available" box.
  2. Select the MIDI OUT Device.
  3. If you installed RAM to activate the SampleStore technology on Rio,
select the amount of RAM you installed.
  4. Click [OK]. Rio will continue installation procedures and no other
     changes are necessary.

Note: The Rio Configuration Utility can be reopened should additional
changes ever become necessary. To open Rio Configure Utility,
double-click on the Configure icon on the Rio Program Group.

Operation Modifications:

Because software cannot receive MIDI data from the Rio, the Output Level
meter on the Rio Control Panel will not be operational. To insure the Rio
and sound card are properly functioning, perform the following test:

  1. Open the Rio Control Panel and turn the volume all the way up.
  2. Close the Rio Control Panel.
  2. Open your primary sound card's mixer application.
  3. Launch a sequencer.
  4. Move the Output Level control on your primary sound card up and down.
  5. If you can control the output volume, the synthesizer is working
     properly.

If there is no change in the output, return to the Rio Configuration
Utility and check your steps.
