Recon 50P - Microphone Not Working

This article applies to the Recon 50P, designed for PS4.

If other players are unable to hear you in chat on your PS4 Console, please check the following:

1. The Mic Boom Isn't Loose in the Mic Boom Jack.

First, unplug the headset from the PS4 Controller. Then, disconnect the mic boom by pulling it straight out of the headset and plug the mic boom back in, making sure you hear a 'click' indicating that the mic boom is connected securely. This may take a couple of tries, and note the metal key alignment if you're having difficulty plugging in the mic boom. Finally, plug the headset back into the PS4 Controller and try to use it in chat.

2. The Headset Works With Another Device.

If the headset's mic still isn't working, plug the headset into a mobile phone and try making a call. If someone is able to hear you in the call, then the headset and microphone are working properly; continue to Step 3. If you couldn't be heard in the call, then there may be an issue with the mic boom; skip to Step 4.

3. PS4 Settings Are Configured Correctly.

Review your PS4 Settings to make sure they're configured as follows:

  1. Go to Settings > Devices > Audio Devices
  2. Set Input & Output Device to Headset Connected to Controller.
  3. Set Output to Headphones to All Audio.
  4. Set Volume Control (Headphones) level to maximum
  5. Select Adjust Microphone Level and follow the on-screen instructions to calibrate your microphone.
  • If your mic was detected on the Adjust Microphone Level screen, then the headset and mic are working with the PS4 properly. If other players still cannot hear you in chat, check your network connection or in-game chat settings.
  • If your mic was not detected on the Adjust Microphone Level screen, continue to Step 4.

4. The Mic Boom Is Working Properly.

To verify the mic boom itself is functioning, you can connect it directly to a Microphone jack on a PC and perform a recording test:

1) Disconnect the mic boom from the headset and plug it into the Microphone / Line In Jack on your PC.

2) In Windows, right-click the speaker icon in the taskbar and click 'Recording devices'.

3) Right click the Microphone / Line In input that the mic boom is plugged into. If you do not see a green check next to the device, click 'Set as Default'. When it's the default device, click 'Properties'.

4) Click the 'Levels' tab. Move the 'Microphone' and 'Microphone Boost' levels to halfway (or close to that). Then click 'OK'.

5) On the Sound Settings screen, click the 'Playback' tab and make sure your Computer speakers are enabled so you can hear audio playback.

6) Open the Windows Sound Recorder by going to Start > Accessories > Sound Recorder or search for 'Sound Recorder'.

7) Start recording, then say something or snap your fingers near the mic boom. Click 'Stop Recording', then you'll be prompted to save the file.

8) Save the file to your Desktop or another convenient folder.

9) Double click the file to open it with your media player, then listen for the sound you recorded previously.

If you were unable to hear any sound in the recording, then the mic boom will need to be replaced. If you were able to hear the sound you recorded but the mic wasn't working during the mobile phone test, then there may be an issue with the headset itself. Please contact our Support Team for additional assistance.

I tried every one of these solutions but it didn't work. I was going to the PS4 party and it had a little alert simple next to the microphone icon. And when I was going onto the ps4 it said microphone undetected. When I was playing my microphone just instantly turned off. I am really disappointed with this design and I hope you take into consideration to help me and fix any errors that customers have with their headsets.

Hi Thomas -- if you're still having the same trouble and if the problem also applies to other devices (smartphone, tablet, etc) then it sounds like the headset would need to be replaced. We can assist with that process if you fill out our support form here:  http://www.turtlebeach.com/en-us/contact-support/

I've tried everything, but in parties, everyone hears a low electronic sound, it started as soon as I got them, I'm not sure what to do!?

Hi I have a strong buzzing noise in my headphones and I am unable to talk to people on xbox one. The headset works with my phone so is it a controller issue?

It now doesn't make the sound normally, but only when I'm charging my DS4 controller when my headset is plugged in, should I get a replacement from the shop, or just turn the mics volume down when my friends hear it, it seems to be the mic, not the headphones. It really bugs my friends so hopefully you will have some advice. Ronan

Purchased these headphones a little more than a week ago. Used maybe a dozen times. After every use they would go back inside the box. All of a sudden the headphones stopped working. Tried all of the above with no positive results. I guess my next step is to return.

Ronan -- If you send a message to our support team then they can send a new mic to you. If it was a recent purchase then the shop may also be able to help with replacement, but if they can't then just shoot a message to our support team and they'll help with warranty service.

Melissa -- We're sorry to hear of that. If you have any trouble returning to the store then you're also invited to contact our support team for replacement service.

Hi my I can hear game and chat audio however sometimes my mic stops and other players can't hear me but I hear them. Also my friends in party chat hear this loud buzzing annoying sound which I think is from the headset but I don't hear it. I tried the call and the person on the other end said he heard me but there was a loud buzzing sound. I then proceeded to check if the mic boom was working and my computer didn't detect that a mic or headphone was plugged in. My in game connection is fine as I don't lag and have fine connection. It is the headset

Hello I just recently bought my recon 50p headset and I can hear the chat fine for a few minutes but then I can't. I have to turn off my PS4 completely then turn it back on for me to be able to hear the chat? If I could get Assistance with this that would be great thank you.

    @Liliana

Sorry to hear that. We can only give you some minor help here, beyond that you would want to speak to our warranty/support team.

You want to double check your controller charge levels, ensure its not low when this happens. Then maybe try it on a phone to see if you have any similar issues during use in a phone call. If it persists you will want to speak to our warranty team.
